Why do the Paralympic Games matter so much?

In addition to being an essential component of the global sporting calendar, the Paralympic Games are the biggest event in the world for promoting social change, and they also have a significant impact on influencing others’ perspectives on disability.

Since 1968, the New Zealand Paralympic Teams have astounded spectators and rival nations with their tenacity, bravery, and, eventually, success. More than two hundred Paralympians have brought home an incredible 237 medals from 26 Paralympic Games, representing their country with pride and dignity, and helping the New Zealand Paralympic Teams achieve success thus far.

Future generations will be inspired by our Paralympians, but they are also a part of a larger movement that is improving people’s lives and shifting perceptions of those with disabilities.

The Legacy of London 2012
2012 saw London host one of the most prosperous Olympic and Paralympic Games ever. The London organising committee had very specific goals from the outset: they wanted to use Great Britain’s hosting of the Olympic and Paralympic Games as a springboard to increase grassroots sport participation, especially among youth, take advantage of the economic growth opportunities presented by the Games, encourage community engagement, and achieve participation across all societal groups.
